Trafalgar Square Books is a small, specialized, hardworking publishing company based in the heart of rural Vermont. Our devoted and enthusiastic staff strives to provide North America with beautifully illustrated books that put the “how” in knitting, crochet, weaving, mosaics, and other handicrafts at readers’ fingertips. TSB is proud to publish top names in the design and craft industries, including the wildly popular duo Arne & Carlos; spinning and weaving expert, the late Anne Field; knitting and cabling innovator Elsebeth Lavold; bestselling crochet veteran Tove Fevang; knit designer Mel Clark; internationally beloved colorwork master Martin Storey; and Scandinavian pattern specialists like Mette Handberg, Annemor Sundbø, and Jorid Linvik, to name just a few.
We published our first knitting book in 1992, entitled Celtic Collection by Alice Starmore; it stayed in print for 24 years and has sold over 50,000 copies. Celtic was swiftly followed by Fishermen’s Sweaters, also the work of Alice Starmore. Both titles were originated by British craft publishers—which was fitting, because at the time, Trafalgar Square was primarily known as a US distributor of British books. We imported, promoted, and sold books throughout the States on behalf of British publishers; however, those books didn’t carry the Trafalgar Square name, and we didn’t own the rights. When the opportunity arose to co-publish books in the US in partnership with select UK publishers, we took the step! Our first ventures in this direction happened to be with publishers of craft books, and the subject became one of our specialties.
Soon after the Alice Starmore titles came our first book by Debbie Bliss, who grew to be one of the world’s knitting design superstars. Our first Debbie Bliss work was Classic Knits for Kids in 1994, followed by 23 others (among them beloved favorites like Baby Knits for Beginners, Simply Baby, and The Knitter’s Year). Another breakout book for TSB—now a classic—was Viking Patterns for Knitting by Elsebeth Lavold. The first edition was published in English in 2000 and vaulted to the top of the knitting bestseller lists! The book is available today in paperback, as is Lavold’s recently-released follow-up book Viking Knits and Ancient Ornaments.
Since then, we’ve branched out, adding crochet, spinning, weaving, and mosaic titles to our handpicked selection of craft books. Our books are known for their clear step-by-step instructions, engaging photography, and detailed illustration, as well as for putting unique and creative ideas into the minds and hands of crafters. At TSB, our passion for publishing top-quality instructional books that are a visual treat as well as a source of information has forged a strong backlist of fan favorites, with exciting new releases full of fresh looks and concepts each season.
