Nina Granlund Sæther in the US!

NinaGSinJP-trafalgarbooks

The fabulous Nina Granlund Sæther, author of the bestselling MITTENS FROM AROUND NORWAY and all new SOCKS FROM AROUND NORWAY, has made her way to the US where she will have limited appearances on the East Coast.

Nina grew up in Asker, Norway, just outside Oslo. Her love and interest for knitting, crochet, sewing, and embroidery started before she was school-age. She is educated as a craft teacher, and worked for a short time in a high school before moving to a career in journalism with the Norwegian arts-and-crafts magazine Norsk Husflid. Nina creates designs in the Scandinavian knitting tradition for Norwegian magazines and her own striking books.

In or around Boston? Meet Nina at JP Knit & Stitch in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 7 to 9 pm as part of the kickoff to JP Knit & Stitch’s Anniversary Sale, which runs through the weekend. (Plus, Local Yarn Store Day is Saturday, April 27! Yippee!)

We are thrilled to announce that Danish knitwear designer and TSB author Vivian Høxbro will be a keynote speaker and teacher at the Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma, Washington, February 14-17, 2019. Not only is Madrona celebrating 20 years of hosting their popular event, it will also be the last as organizers have announced their retirement.

traditionaldanishsweaters-trafalgarbooksVivian Høxbro’s Friday night talk will explain her recent research of the Danish Nattrøjer (“night sweater”) and the distinctive star and cross patterns that were traditionally on them. She will also share samples from her forthcoming English-language edition of the book TRADITIONAL DANISH SWEATERS, which will be published by TSB in July 2019.

Høxbro will teach a class she calls “Star Struck” Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, which will show students how to knit the 19th-century Danish star motifs featured in her book. There are many different kinds of stars, and they can, in turn, be used in a variety of fabulous patterns. To register for the Retreat and Høxbro’s classes, CLICK HERE.

Høxbro has been designing for knitters for more than 30 years and is well known for her books on Domino Knitting and Shadow Knitting, as well as her patterns on Ravelry.

Knit in Public and You Could Win!

WWKIPD-FB-trafalgarbooks

Nina Granlund Sæther, author of MITTENS FROM AROUND NORWAY.

In case you somehow haven’t heard yet, Saturday, June 9, 2018, is World Wide Knit in Public Day. That’s right, it is 24 hours devoted to clicking needles in unlikely places. I mean, you probably do it already, right? You have your knitting in the passenger seat on your commute to work “just in case” a lane closure causes some lengthy delays. You bring it along to soccer practice, and rely on its calming qualities in those frustrating work meetings. WWKIPDay is just a super-good excuse to knit one, purl two between subway stops. This is a case where you want EVERYONE to be looking!

header-logo2This is what the WWKIPDay website says about what it calls the “largest knitter-run event in the world”: “World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you.  Who knows, you might even bump into your neighbor! Consider this a spark, to ignite a fire; getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air.”

Mittens Around Norway FinalWe at TSB want to know where YOU knit this WWKIPDay. Post a picture and tag our Facebook (@trafalgarsquarecraftbooks), Twitter (@TSBCrafts), or Instagram (@trafalgarsquarecraftbooks) account and you’ll be automatically entered to win* a copy of Nina Granlund Sæther’s bestselling book MITTENS FROM AROUND NORWAY. That’s right, we want to award you for doing what you like best. So don’t hide in your house this Saturday! Get out there and knit for all you’re worth.

We look forward to sharing where we knit in public, and seeing where you do!

Nina Granlund Sæther’s book MITTENS FROM AROUND NORWAY is also available from the TSB online bookstore, where shipping in the US is FREE.

TNNA_LYSDay_WebBanner

What’s better than spending an hour or two immersing our creative senses in colorfully spun skeins of wool, mohair, alpaca, and silk? Maybe having a pleasant conversation with a like-minded individual who is equally at peace as she roams, in search of a specific shade or texture…perhaps asking a question of a helpful staff member nearby, or complimenting the handknit sweater she proudly models?

Many of us count down the days to our monthly, maybe even weekly trips to our local yarn stores where we’ve nurtured friendships with staff and fellow customers; where we’ve relished the chance to get up-close-and-personal with the materials that bring our handmade projects to life; where gatherings, lectures, and demonstrations have educated us and many others. When we shop at our local yarn store, we know our hard-earned dollars are going to support the local economy, that they are helping our communities remain vibrant and diverse in their social and commercial offerings, and they are ensuring crafting, making, and using one’s hands—in both traditional and innovative ways—has a future in a world dominated by technology and voice activation.

Local Yarn Store Day (#LYSDay) is a brick-and-mortar yarn shop appreciation day created by TNNA Yarn Group (www.tnna.org). The inaugural LYS Day will take place on April 21, 2018, and is designed to show support for small businesses while bringing together a unique community of knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners to drive awareness and celebrate the craft.

Bring a friend to your local yarn shop on April 21! Take pictures at your favorite store and share them on social media. Spread your passion for creating far and wide while supporting the business just down the road.

As an added bonus, Local Yarn Store Day will feature items from your favorite yarn companies and designers that will only be available at brick-and-mortar local yarn shops (not online). So make your plan now to visit your local yarn store on Saturday!

Exciting Mosaic Summit in Boston!

MosaicSummit-trafalgarbooksIf you love to play with tile and grout like we do, don’t miss the 16th Annual American Mosaic Summit, March 13 – 18, 2018, in Boston, Massachusetts at The Westin Boston Waterfront. Hosted by the Society of American Mosaic Artists, the American Mosaic Summit includes exciting speakers, inspiring presentations and educational workshops by top mosaic artists, networking opportunities, and a mosaic tour of Boston.

You can still sign up for the “Methods to Making It Great! Installation and Fabrication Processes and Techniques” with TSB author Bonnie Fitzgerald. Students will be provided step-by-step hands-on experience in three indirect fabrication processes: mesh method, face taping, and reverse on paper. Installation techniques, site preparation, and design modifications for large-scale work are all demonstrated or discussed. For more information or to register, CLICK HERE.

There is also still room in “Understanding and Using Color Tone” with TSB friend and book designer Carrie Fradkin. Students will create simple unattached combinations of tesserae and see how understanding tone can enhance a mosaic. Using mobile smartphones or iPads, students will learn to explore and “see” tone in tesserae, acquiring the ability to compare and make informed decisions based on color choices. This information will change how students think about the color choices they make in their work. For more information or to register, CLICK HERE.
