Knitting Patterns That WOW!

WildMittensUnrulySocks-trafalgarbooks.png

All knitters already have the ingredients they need to succeed with stranded knitting: a few colors they love, a set of needles, and the courage to give it a try—plus, of course, a quick, fun pattern they just can’t put down!

WILD MITTENS & UNRULY SOCKS by Lumi Karmitsa is as fun as the title suggests. It is full of WOW-worthy patterns, including fierce tigers, brilliant peonies, looming giraffes, cute Chihuahuas, and creeping jellyfish. With over twenty different stranded patterns for socks and mittens, the book is positively bursting with inspiration.

“All Finnish children used to learn the basics of knitting at school, and so did I,” says Karmitsa. “However, I was never into knitting, until one day, out of the blue, I decided to knit a pair of stranded mittens for a friend. I found a nice pattern and followed it. The end result was pleasing enough, and this first introduction to colorwork knitting made me realize that I could design my own patterns.

“My firm belief is that with some patience anyone can do stranded knitting. That is the whole message of WILD MITTENS & UNRULY SOCKS, since I myself started to design its contents with only the experience of just one pair of stranded mittens!”

WILD MITTENS & UNRULY SOCKS is available now from the TSB online bookstore, where shipping in the US is FREE. (It’s the most fun you’ve ever had with your knitting needles!)

Arne & Carlos On Tour!

ArneCarlosOnTour-trafalgarbooks

We at TSB are so excited that our knitting rockstars Arne & Carlos have a fall teaching and speaking tour planned in the United States, October 18 to November 11, 2018!

Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison launched their Arne & Carlos knitwear line in 2007, gaining notice with their witty reworkings of classic Scandinavian motifs—for example, sweaters festooned with space invaders rather than reindeer. Their brand hit big when Rei Kawakubo of cult fashion house Commes des Garҫon saw the Arne & Carlos “holiday balls” they’d knitted for family and friends, and immediately placed an order for 400. Arne and Carlos thought they were to be used for storefront decoration, but went to the boutique in Paris and found them for sale for €100 each.

“We laughed at the price,” claims Carlos, “but it was provocation, too. We felt nobody should pay so much for something anybody can make. So we thought, let’s write a book giving people all they need to do it themselves.”

ArneCarlosFavoriteDesignsThe association with Commes des Garҫon led to a holiday mini-collection of garments studded with Swarovski crystals in 2008, and a line of sweaters, hats, and scarves for Urban Outfitters in 2009. Perhaps more importantly, the Parisian “provocation” inspired Arne and Carlos’ first book, 55 CHRISTMAS BALLS TO KNIT, an international bestseller, now translated into seven languages, and published in English by TSB. One how-to knit book begat seven more, including their newest—ARNE & CARLOS FAVORITE DESIGNS: GREATEST HITS AND NEW INSPIRATIONS, released in April of 2018.

Arne and Carlos are teaching classes and speaking at shops, guilds, and retreats across the country, beginning in October. Register for classes near you now, as many are already sold out!

Need-to-Know Knitting: The 3 Must-Have Pattern Techniques

TheBig3KnittingTech-trafalgarbooks

Hats, mittens, slippers, jackets, vests—everything’s better with patterning! Internationally recognized knitting expert Ann-Mari Nilsson’s comprehensive pattern treasury THE BIG 3 KNITTING TECHNIQUES covers the patterns you need to know. The book includes basic templates for a wide variety of garments; mix and match with whatever catches your eye from the library of over 80 charts, working your choice of accessory with whichever design you like best.

“I’ve chosen three methods of patterning that range from easy to more difficult,” says Nilsson. “Relief-stitch patterns (also called surface or structure patterns), designs with slipped stitches, and two-color stranded knitting.”

Big 3 Knitting Techniques1  Relief-stitch patterns produce a fine and supple garment and consist of knit and purl stitches in a single color. You must knit firmly so the pattern is clearly visible—usually after you have soaked and blocked it.

2  Slip-stitch patterns are worked with two or more colors, but only one color per row. On the row with Color 1, slip the Color 2 stitches to the right needle without knitting them; on the row knitted with Color 2, slip the stitches of Color 1 to the right needle. It’s easy and fun and the result looks much more complicated than it actually is.

3  Classic two-color stranded knitting produces warm and sturdy garments. It’s worked in stockinette stitch with two strands of yarn in different colors that run parallel as you work. If there are long color sections in the design, you have to twist the two yarns around each other on the back (wrong side) of the fabric at least every third stitch, or sometimes every other stitch to catch the yarn not in use.

With these skills in hand, you can follow designs with fabulous results, or combine motifs and knit your own unique creations!

THE BIG 3 KNITTING TECHNIQUES is available now from TSB’s online bookstore, where shipping in the US is FREE.

5 Reasons We Love Knitting Afghans

5 Reasons We Love Knitting Afghans

“One of the reasons I love designing and knitting afghans is the wonderful flexibility they offer,” says renowned knitwear designer Martin Storey and author of the book AFGHAN KNITS. Here are five more motives for giving your knitting needles a chance to play with an afghan pattern (or seven!):

1 Because the patterns are so straightforward, you can go to town on a great range of textured stitches or brilliant color ways, or a combination of the two.

2 Projects composed of afghan squares or strips are so portable, you can knit on trains, boats, and planes, on your lunch break or on the beach, all with your knitting project fitting conveniently into a small bag.

3 For knitting addicts, there’s room to play, for novice knitters, nothing could be simpler.

4 With size, the sky is the limit! It is easy to change a small project into a much bigger throw, or a larger one into something you can complete sooner, if the mood takes you. Look at the projects above from Martin Storey’s book AFGHAN KNITS: The same basic pattern can be a placemat, a table runner, or a beach blanket!

5 Patterns can be converted to hardier fare: for example, a blanket can become a rug by choosing thicker yarn and bigger needles.

From Jewelry-Making, to Sculpture, to Costumes: Getting to Know Knitwear Designer Irene Haugland

IreneHaugland-trafalgarbooks

Recognized as one of Norway’s most talented knitwear designers, Irene Haugland blends her love for the natural beauty, people, and cultural heritage of the Telemark region of the country with her contemporary sense for color and pattern. Her book KNITS FROM THE HEART OF NORWAY offers stunning sweaters, cardigans, socks, hats, and mittens for men, women, and children, with step-by-step instructions, gorgeous color photographs, and the occasional finishing touch of traditional Norwegian embroidery. All the garments were designed and knitted in Lunde, in the heart of Norway’s Telemark region.

“I loved dolls of all kinds,” says Haugland, “and was already designing clothes for them by the time I was five years old…the incipient spark of design had been lit.

“When I was 17 years old, I entered the goldsmith program at Elvebakken Vocational School. It was absolutely fantastic, but living in an apartment in Oslo was a challenge. I missed my home, my parents, my friends, and Telemark. I was on of the eight students who went on to the second level, but in the middle of the second year, I wanted to go home, and so I dropped out of the program. Mamma and Pappa said that I wasn’t about to loaf for the rest of the year, so they sent me to the homemaking school in Seljord. There I got a certificate in handcrafts, although I refused to follow the curriculum in Hardanger embroidery and white embroidery on white fabric, etc. I almost lived in the handcraft room, creating fantastic clothes from woven and knitted fabric…

KnitsfromAroundNorway1-trafalgarbooks

The garments in Haugland’s book were designed and knitted in Lunde, in the heart of Norway’s Telemark region.

“In 1974 I enrolled in the Metals program at the National Handcraft and Art-Industry School in Oslo. After meeting the exacting drawing requirements, I was one of the few lucky ones. It was a huge honor to be accepted by the program. I was already halfway trained as a jeweler from before, so now i was able to engage in larger projects. However, almost all my free time was used for designing clothing. During my second year, I received permission to leave school. and change to a clothing and costume program.

“The fourth year was time for a comprehensive thesis in knitting…The next fall, my portfolio of knitted creations was ready. I designed and knitted a collection for Knitted…The collection was successful and I was asked to work at Dale of Norway where I had 12 exciting and productive years.”
